The headline screams "Drop 7 lbs in 7 days!". Where do I sign up?!
Hang on there desperado, before you do, read this...
Did you know that the type of foods that you eat can cause massive fluctuations to your scale weight?
Yet, this has NOTHING whatsoever to do with your fat loss efforts.
The type of foods is, namely, carbohydrates. Delicious carbohydrates.
When you eat an excess of carbs that is not used for energy straight away, it gets converted to glycogen. It is then stored in the body and can be used at a later time when the body needs it.
However, it needs to bind to water before it can be stored. For every 1g of stored glycogen, the body stores 3-4g of water with it.
On average, the body can store up to 500g of glycogen. Therefore, to store this amount, a further 2000g of water is needed.
This equates to a stored weight of up to 2.5kg between glycogen and water (just over 5.5 lbs) that is not fat.
On the other hand, if you eat less carbs than need, you use the stored energy reserves (glycogen). When the stored glycogen is used for energy, you also lose the stored water bound to it.
If the glycogen reserves are depleted, that’s a whopping 2.5kg (or 5.5 lbs) shift on the scales, which has NOTHING whatsoever to do with fat loss.
It is exactly this weighing scales trickery that allures people into believing that they have lost "7 lbs in 7 days" as a result of their new low carb diet, cleanse or detox.
Yes, you have lost 7 lbs in 7 days, but all you have really lost is mainly stored glycogen and water.
And perhaps the contents of your bowels.
The day you finish with your low carb diet, cleanse, or detox, is the day you regain back every last drop of the scale weight (glycogen and water) and perhaps even more (fat this time), as you make up for the lost time with your beloved carbs.
Sure look, there always next Monday to try again, right?
